This week I’ve been reflecting on research findings by Daniel Goleman that the most effective leaders are alike in one crucial way: they all have a high degree of Emotional Intelligence.
He describes 5 key skills of EQ that enable the best leaders to maximise their own and others’ performance:
- Self Awareness
- Self Regulation
- Motivation
- Empathy
- Social Skills
Motivation is an interesting one.
Tell me what you think about this…
Motivation as a leadership trait can be defined as being driven to achieve beyond expectations – their own and others’. They have an internal desire to achieve for the sake of achievement. They’re not motivated by external factors like money and a title.
Signs of such Internal Motivation include:
- A passion for the work itself
- Seeking out creative challenges
- You love to learn
- Unflagging energy to do things better
- A curiosity to explore new approaches
- There is pride in a job well done
Such leaders will measure and track progress – the achievements and progress of themselves, their team, their organisation.
Importantly, they also exhibit persistence, optimism (even in the face of failure) and organisational commitment.
Combined with self-awareness and self-regulation, such motivation makes an outstanding leader others will want to work with and follow.
Do you agree?
