What do you do when you come up with an obstacle blocking your path?
This morning I was walking along a path, on my way to where I wanted to go – and came up to a tree that had fallen down, completely blocking it.
Now this obstacle was about 3 times bigger than me – quite an obstacle – I couldn’t take a flying leap to get over it.
I did consider going back.
The only problem with that is that I would be significantly late.
I did think about climbing over… But there were too many obstacles within the obstacle and I worried about getting stuck (you know, the way Pooh-Bear used to get stuck in a hole chasing his honey…)
As you can see – it wasn’t that easy to go around it either…
And to add to that, it has been raining and raining and raining here… so much mud and mush on the side of the path.
I thought that if I’d stayed in bed and hadn’t gone for exercise I wouldn’t have come up against the block.
The good news is that I made it here… I slowed down, looked for more options, and was able to go around a different way and continue towards my destination.
Of course, this is just a little light-hearted example of obstacles that we face in our work and life, yet the metaphor holds true.
Obstacles can be your friend – they remind us that we’re on the road, that we’ve set a goal, that we’re moving forward. They tell us we are actually striving toward something, that we are changing and making progress.
Its OK to pause… and then keep going.
