As a Leadership mindset coach working closely with many Leaders, one common thread I’ve observed is the tug-of-war between the pursuit of perfection, the desire for growth and just doing ‘it’!

I’m sure you’d agree, perfectionism can be a double-edged sword.

While it drives us to aim for excellence, to be outstanding, to achieve those BHAGs, it can also paralyse us… we just need a bit more information, some more certainty, another few months of experience to get our competence and confidence up… just a bit more tweaking (that can turn into burning the midnight oil…)

It’s crucial to remember that leadership is about growth, not waiting until everything is ‘perfect.’

Progress, not perfection, should be our guiding star. Our inner mantra.

We’re always learning. We can always do better.

So, here are some thoughts on cultivating a growth mindset and embracing progress:

Redefine Perfect: Instead of waiting for perfection, redefine it as continuous improvement. Each step forward, no matter how small, is progress.

Embrace Imperfection: Perfectionism often leads to procrastination. Don’t be afraid to take imperfect actions. You’ll refine your path as you go.

Learn and Adapt: Adopt the idea that mistakes and setbacks are opportunities for learning and growth. Leaders who continually seek improvement are the ones who evolve and thrive.

Celebrate Milestones: Recognize and celebrate your achievements, even the small ones. They are stepping stones on your journey.

Seek Feedback: Feedback is a powerful tool for growth. Welcome it as a means to enhance your skills and perspective. Ask: ‘What can I do better?’ ‘What could I stop doing?’

Delegating with Confidence: Trust your team and delegate with confidence, knowing that their unique perspectives can lead to innovative solutions.

Self-Compassion: Show yourself the same compassion you offer others. Leadership is a journey, and it’s okay to acknowledge your own growth along the way.

Leadership is a dynamic journey, and it’s the willingness to learn, adapt and make progress that sets great leaders apart.
